Hire Car & Taxi Licence Guide (Guyana 2026)

Eligibility Requirements

• Be at least 21 years old.
• Have held a valid Motor Car Licence for at least 2 years.
• Be able to read and write English.
• Hold a valid National ID card or Guyana Passport.
• Have good character — no disqualifying criminal or driving offences.
• Get approval from the Certifying Officer and the Traffic Chief.
• Pass the traffic-related examination (confirmed by a Licensing Officer).

Step-by-Step Application

   Obtain the Form

   Get the 'Application for Driver, Provisional & Conductor's Licence' form from the GRA Licence Revenue Office or download it from the GRA forms page.

   Complete the Form

   Fill in your details, current driver's licence number, and indicate you are applying for a Hire Car Driver's Licence.

   Gather Documents

   Completed form, original + copy of your current Motor Car Licence (held 2+ years), original + copy of valid ID, and two passport-sized photos.

   Submit at GRA

   Visit the Licence Revenue Office or your nearest Integrated Regional Tax Office (IRTO). Submit documents and pay the GYD $2,500 fee.

   Receive Your Licence

   Once processed, you receive your Hire Car Driver's Licence, valid 3 years from purchase.

Vehicle Inspection (Corporate Yellow)

All hire cars undergo a detailed examination by a Licence Revenue Officer covering colour (must be Corporate Yellow), roadworthiness (brakes, lights, tyres), interior condition, and documentation. The motor vehicle licence for Corporate Yellow hire cars is FREE. Operating a taxi in any other colour is illegal.
